In 1973 he graduated from the Čiurlionis School of Arts, in 1978 he graduated from the Lithuanian Conservatory (M. Azizbekova's class). In 1978–87 he taught at the Klaipėda faculties of the Lithuanian Conservatory, in 1987–94 at the J. Tallat-Kelpšas Conservatory in Vilnius, and since 1994 he has been teaching at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. At the beginning of his professional career, he expressed himself as a performer of academic music: he organized recitals, performed with the Lithuanian Chamber and Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestras, the Vilnius String Quartet, and the chamber ensemble Regnum. In 1991, he founded the contemporary music ensemble Ex tempore, with which he actively performed in Lithuania and abroad until 2003.
