Teacher at the Boris Tchaikovsky Film Acting Studio and VGIK. He made his debut as an actor in the film “On the Red Front” (1920).In 1918-1920 he served in the Political Department of the Red Army Headquarters.
In 1920-1921 he studied at the State Film School (workshop of Lev Kuleshov).
Since 1920 - theater actor.
In 1925, he became an actor at the Moscow Satire Theater.
Since 1925 - director of the film "Mezhrabpomfilm".
In 1929-1930 he studied sound recording equipment in Berlin.
Since 1930, he has been a sound engineer at the Mezhrabpomfilm film studio.
In June 1941 he joined the militia. In October 1941 he was surrounded and captured. In the fall of 1944, he escaped from captivity and became a monk under the name of Lavrentia (according to other sources - Innocent) in the Kitskansky monastery in the Bendery district of Moldova.
In July 1945 he was illegally arrested. After his arrest, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with disqualification for 5 years and confiscation of property. He was exiled to Siberia, first to a camp, then to a settlement near Minusinsk.In February 1952 he was released.
Rehabilitated in October 2005 by the decision of the Criminal College of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Republic of Moldova
.In the mid-1950s he moved to Sverdlovsk, where he again went through all the stages of the directing profession from assistant to director.
Since 1956 - director and sound engineer at the Sverdlovsk film and production studio.In 1957, actor of the Minusinsk Theater.Since 1962 - director of the Chelyabinsk television studio.People's Artist of the RSFSR (1991).
He was buried in a cemetery in the northern part of the city of Miass, outside Mashgorodok.
