1960-1964 he attended Vievis Secondary School and studied piano at the Children's Music School (teacher J. Gečas). In 1964-1971 he studied choir conducting at the Vilnius M. K. Čiurlionis Secondary School of Art (teacher A. Jozėnas). In 1971 he won the Republican Competition of Young Conductors in Vilnius. In 1971-1979 he studied choral conducting at the Leningrad State N. Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire and at the post-graduate school (class of prof. A. Mikhailov), and also attended doc. In 1978-1979 he was the director of the conservatory's choir studio and the city women's choir.
Since 1976 he has been a lecturer at the Choir Conducting Department of the Lithuanian State Conservatoire (Academy of Music), since 1982 he has been a senior lecturer, since 1991 - associate professor, and since 2010 - professor. Since 1982, director of the Conservatoire's girls' choir studio, conductor - choirmaster of the mixed choir studio from 1984 to 1989.Since 2012, director of the girls' choir of the Lithuanian Music Academy of Music, professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Performing Arts (LEU).Since 1986, conductor of the Chamber Choir of the Lithuanian State Conservatoire, from 1991 to 1996, art director and conductor. In 1988 the choir won three first prizes, one second prize and the Grand Prix at the International Choir Competition in Gorizia, Italy.In 1989 the choir took part in the International Choir Competition in Arezzo, Italy. The choir visited Florence and Rome, where they were received by Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, and participated in his celebration of St. Peter's Day. They sang Lithuanian hymns. In the autumn of 1989, the choir took part in the Grand Prix Winners' Festival of European International Competitions on the island of Sardinia (Italy - Oristne). In 1990, at the International Choir Competition in France (Tours), the Vilnius choir won two first prizes, the Grand Prix and a special prize, and in 1990, at the International Choir Competition in Spain (Tolosa), the choir won one first prize, two second prizes and a third prize. In 1991, at the International Choir Competition in Tours, France, the choir under the direction of T. Šumskas was awarded the European Grand Prix and the title of the best choir in Europe (the first Lithuanian choir). The choir has given concerts in Panama, the USA, Scotland, France, Spain, Italy, Cuba, Germany, the choir has been conducted by famous foreign and Lithuanian conductors, the programmes of the concerts have included difficult works by Lithuanian and foreign composers. The choir has recorded eight CDs abroad, and in 1993 released an audio cassette of works by M. K. Čiurlionis.
T. Šumskas has been the conductor of the Vilma Men's Choir of the Vilnius Production Association since 1979, artistic director and conductor from 1983-1998. In 1988 the collective was renamed "Vycis". The choir has learnt more than 200 compositions by Lithuanian and foreign composers (with other ensembles it performed for the first time B. Kutavičius' oratorio "The World Tree" and D. Lapinskas's oratorio "To the deceased our loved ones"), and has given more than 400 concerts in Lithuania and abroad: in Germany, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Korea, Switzerland, Spain, the United States of America, Italy, Slovakia. In 1985 he won the title of the absolute best male choir at the Republican Song Festival competition "Vytis", in 1987 he was a laureate of the 7th and 8th Stasys Šimkus Choir Competitions in Klaipėda in 1987 and 1989, in 1990 he was a participant of the Lithuanian Folk Song Festival, in 1994 he won the second prize at the 1st World Lithuanian Song Festival competition in Vilnius. "Vytis took part in many international competitions, where it won first prizes and other prizes: in 1991 in Spain (Tolosa), in 1993 in Switzerland (Montreaux), in 1995 in the USA (Atlanta), in 1996 in Germany (Lindenholzhausen), in 1997 in Italy (Rome) and elsewhere.The choir has released three CDs and, together with the state brass band "Trimitas", the record "Žygis į Vilnių" (March to Vilnius); an audio cassette of the choir was released in Atlanta (USA); the Lithuanian radio funds contain over a hundred recordings of "Vycis" works.
Since 1999 he has been the director of the men's choir "Aidas" of the Lithuanian Armed Forces' Vilnius Garrison Officer's Quarters. The choir has successfully participated in international festivals: the 10th Festival of Songs of the Sea "Shanti" (Germany), the 9th Festival of Religious and Organ Music "Silesia Sonans" (Poland), "Džiugaukime...Aleliuja!", "Sielos ilgesys", "Paribio daina" (Song of the Paribus). He has released 8 CDs of Lithuanian patriotic songs, sacred and popular classical pieces. The choir regularly performs with the Lithuanian Armed Forces Orchestras and the most famous Lithuanian soloists.Aidas is one of the most popular male choirs in the country and participates in the biggest LRT projects and broadcasts.
Since 2018 T. Šumskas has been the director of the women's choir Dainų sodai, which has developed an active concert activity. The ensemble has performed on various occasions with renowned professional orchestras such as the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Representative Orchestra of the Ministry of the Interior. "Song Gardens successfully participated in the international "Paribio Dainos" competition and won the title of laureate. The choir has performed several times at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania during solemn meetings to mark important national holidays and at traditional concerts dedicated to the Defenders of Freedom. Together with several other prominent ensembles, the choir was invited to sing at the state funeral of the 1863 rebels at the Vilnius Cathedral organised by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, and took part in the festival dedicated to the anniversary of J. The ensemble has repeatedly presented its concert programme with success at the openings of exhibitions of famous artists, libraries, schools, and clinics in Vilnius.
