composer, singer (tenor), pedagogue. In 1949-50 he studied singing at the Kaunas J. Gruodis Music School, in 1950-55 he continued his singing studies at the Lithuanian State Conservatoire (in the class of Prof. K. Petrauskas), and in 1954-59 he also studied composition (in the class of Prof. J. Juzeliūnas). In 1951-59 he sang in the Lithuanian Radio Vocal Ensemble. 1959-60 taught theoretical disciplines at the Vilnius Culture and Education Technical School. Since 1960 lecturer at the Music Theory Department of the Lithuanian State Conservatoire, since 1964 senior lecturer, since 1977 associate professor, since 1992 professor. He has also taught theoretical disciplines at the Vilnius M. K. Čiurlionis Secondary School of Art and the J. Tallat-Kelpša School of Music and Technical College. More than 300 musicians (mostly singers) have graduated from his class of solfege and other theoretical disciplines.
V. "Rhythm Exercises" (I - 1970, II - 1973), "The use of the juxtaposition of monosyllables and parallel tonalities in solfeggio lessons" (1976), "A Collection of Contemporary Lithuanian Melodies for Solfeggio Exercises" (1988), and others. Many times he was the chairman of the qualification commissions for state examinations at Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys higher music schools, chairman or member of the juries of choir competitions. In 1980, the teacher was awarded the honorary title of Meritorious Teacher. Since 1960 he has been a member of the Lithuanian Composers' Union.
V. Kairiūkštis' rich output is dominated by vocal music - cantatas, oratorios, works for choirs and vocal ensembles, vocal cycles, solo songs and romances. Many of his works have been recorded on records, published in various collections and individual publications. Three songs have been awarded the S. Šimkus Prize.
