In 1933-1937 he attended Šunskiai Primary School, in 1937-1943 he attended Rygiškių Jonas boys' gymnasium in Marijampole. He was enrolled in the Vilkaviškis Seminary. In 1944-1948 he studied monumental painting and stained glass at the Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (teachers Stasys Ušinskas, Liudas Truikys). 1948-1958 spent in exile in Krasnoyarsk Krai. He worked as a pine tree feller, sawmill worker, loader, builder, logger, school drawing teacher and other jobs. After returning from exile in 1958-1961, he studied at the Faculty of Painting of the LSSR Art Institute (teacher Antanas Gudaitis). From 1961 to 1976 he taught at the M. K. Čiurlionis Art School. Since 1976 free artist.
Member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union since 1964, chairman of the painting section from 1982-1987. Since 1972, member of the Consultative Commission of the Lithuanian Folk Art Society.
At the beginning of his career, he painted figurative compositions (the cycle "Women and the Sea", 1971), still lifes. Later, he worked mainly on portraits of Lithuanian cultural figures: painters ("Kazė Zimblytė", 1972; "Antanas Gudaitis", 1977; "Viktoras Vizgirda", 1977), folk artists ("Dzūkų singer Marė Kuodžiūtė-Navickienė", 1974; "Stanislovas Riauba", 1976; "Stanislovas Riauba", 1976; "Dzūkų singer Marė Kuodžiūtė-Navickienė", 1974), portraits of the artist."Lionginas Šepka", 1977), actors ("Rūta Staliliūnaitė", 1976), historical personalities ("The Dukes of Lithuania", Metropolis Restaurant, Kaunas, 1972-1975; "Steponas Batoras", "Motiejus Kazimieras Sarbievijus", 1976-1979; "King Mindaugas", 1992-2000). He has painted group portraits ("Singer Marijona Rakauskaitė and painter Liudas Truikys", 1974; "The Jonušai Family II", 2002). His works are distinctive interpretations of Lithuanian Expressionism and folk sculpture, with a clear composition, restrained colouring, and a precise psychological character.
Since 1962 he has participated in exhibitions. He has held individual exhibitions in Lithuania (Vilnius, 1978; Kaunas, 1979; Paežeriai, 1999-2000; Marijampolė, 1996) and abroad (Moscow, 1978; Chicago, 1986). His works are held by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, the MO Museum, as well as museums and galleries in Bulgaria, the USA, Georgia, Lithuania, Macedonia, France, Russia, Sweden, Hungary.
