Arnalds started out as a drummer in several local metal bands, and in 2004 he recorded several musical introductions and epilogues for German metal band Heaven Shall Burn. In 2007 he released his debut album Eulogy for Evolution and in 2008 he toured with the famous Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. In 2009, Arnalds organised a musical experiment where he created a new song every day for a week and posted it on his website. In 2009, Olafur Arnalds composed music for the ballet Dyad, directed by British choreographer Wayne McGregor.
