Artist (painter, graphic artist). Born on 24 July 1949. Graduated from the S. Žukas Applied Art Technical School in Kaunas in 1968, and from the Lithuanian Art Institute in 1973 (student of Jonas Švažas). Since 1980 lives in Warsaw. Since 1969 participates in art exhibitions. He has held about 100 individual exhibitions in various countries; in Lithuania - 1993, 1996, 2000, 2002. He has painted paintings and created graphic works (ex-libris, posters, miniatures, book covers). He has illustrated about 40 books (mainly for children): "Robot and Bow Tie" by V. Žilinskaitė (1978); "Atgalios" by Z. Batko (published in Warsaw), "The Golden Pot and Other Stories" by E. T. A. Hoffman (both 1985), "The Golden Pot and Other Stories" by E. T. A. Hoffman (both 1985), and "The Golden Pot and Other Stories" (both 1985). Pero's Le Chat botté (1990, published in Zurich), A. Ramachander's Little Pig (1992, published in London), K. Bauman's The Hungry One (1993, published in Zurich and New York). He staged The White Moose (1993) at the Studio Theatre in Warsaw. He creates performances, artistic actions and installations ("The Road" - 1992, "The Well" - 1993, "Wheels" - 1995, "Erotikos" - 1997, "Rain" - 2000). He created unique artistic genres - masks and the so-called "smutki" (grief). The main motifs of his work are human loneliness, alienation, sadness, contemplation. The artistic expression is characterised by elements of the grotesque, paradox and absurd, and the motives of reality are given a metaphysical quality; memories of the homeland, childhood impressions and ethnographic realities of the Lithuanian countryside are vivid. The artist's works preserved at the LAM include "Farewell" (1973, LAM), "Napalys" (1974, LAM), "Father in the Flowering Garden" (1976, LAM).
He has received about 40 international awards, including: Medals of Honour at the International Biennial of Exlibrises in Malbork (Poland) (1973, 1975, 1979), Grand Prix at the International Children's Book Exhibition in Barcelona (1986), Grand Prix at the International Poster Biennial in Lahti (Finland) (1989), Gold Medal at the International Poster Exhibition in Toyama (Japan) (1994), and the Polish Poster Biennial in Katowice (Gold Medal in Katowice, Poland, 1999). In 2001 he was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize.
