1975-1986 studied at Kaunas J. Jablonskis Secondary School. 1988-1994 studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VDA), where he graduated as a graphic artist (MA). 1995-1997 studied Japanese painting at the National University of Arts and Music in Tokyo. 1997-2001 - studied at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). Ph.D. in Philosophy, thesis in English "The New Paradigm of Order in the Philosophy of Nishida and Merleau-Ponty".
1997-2004 worked as a lecturer of graphic arts at the Kaunas Faculty of Arts of the VAA, 2001-2002 as an assistant in the Department of Philosophy of VMU. 2002-2003 Vice-Dean of the Kaunas Art Faculty of the VAA, 2003-2004 Dean and Chief Research Fellow. Since 2000 visiting lecturer at the Centre of Oriental Studies of Vilnius University (VU). Since 2004 Vice-Rector of Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, from 2005 and 2007 he worked as an associate professor at the Department of History and Theory of Art and the Department of Graphic Arts.
2004-2005 organizer of international scientific conferences. Since 2005 - director of doctoral thesis preparation, since 2005 - member of the dissertation defence councils, dissertation opponent at VMU, VDA, VU. Since 2006 Chairman of the Appeals Commission of the Centre for Quality Assessment of Studies. 2006-2007 Chairman of the Evaluation Committee for Master's Theses at the Latvian Academy of Arts. Moderator of the architectural discussions at the Lithuanian-Japanese architectural events "East-East" in 2002 and 2009.
Member of the Lithuanian National Group of the Bologna Process (chairman in 2004-2008), member of the European Association of Japanese Studies, member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union, member of the Lithuanian Philosophical Society, member of the editorial board of the journal "Acta Orientalia Vilnensia." Since 2008 Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Creative and Cultural Industries.
2010-2012 Lithuanian Minister of Culture.
