191919-1926 he attended primary school,
later pro-gymnasium. In 1926-1931 he studied painting at the Kaunas Art School. He began to draw while still
studying at the progymnasium. From 1931 he earned his living by painting landscapes and portraits,
restoring old paintings for Kaunas museums. Before the war he worked as a painter in Šiauliai, Klaipėda and Vilnius
drama theatre. From 1944 to 1976 he worked at the Vinius State Art Institute in various positions. In 1954 he was awarded the honorary title of Lithuanian People's Artist. 1957-1963 Vice-rector of the Art
Institute (now the Academy of Arts). He died on 14 February 1976 and was buried in the Vilnius
