Italian film director and screenwriter, who has made such films as The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, The Last Emperor and The Dreamers.
Growing up in a creative environment, Bertolucci started writing at the age of 15 and soon after won several prestigious awards for his first book. As a young man, Bertolucci wanted to become a poet, just like his father. From 1958 to 1961 he attended the Faculty of Modern Literature at the University of Rome, but never graduated. In 1962, at the age of 22, he made his first feature-length film, La commare secca. In 1968, together with S. Leone and D. Argento, he wrote the screenplay for Once in the Wild West. In 1970, he wrote the highly innovative screenplay for the drama film The Conformist, which made Bertolucci world-famous.
