In 1946 he graduated from Upytė Primary School. In 1946-1951 he studied at the 1st Boys' Gymnasium in Panevėžys, played in the brass band of the gymnasium, and composed his first pieces under the encouragement of the composer Antanas Belazars. In 1951-1953 he studied at the Panevėžys School of Music, trombone class. In 1953-1958 he studied at the Folklore Department of the LSSR Conservatoire, which was headed at that time by Prof. Jadvyga Čiurlionytė. In 1958-1967 he taught theoretical disciplines at the Panevėžys Music Technical School and worked as a concertmaster.
1962-1965 he studied composition in the class of Julius Juzeliūnas. In 1967-1975 he was the head of the music theory department and a lecturer at the Kaunas J. Gruodis Higher School of Music (now the Conservatoire). 1976-1982 Director of Kaunas Artists' House. 1982-1985 Director of the M. and K. Petrauskas Memorial Museum. Since 1985 he devoted himself to creative work. Buried in Petrašiūnai Cemetery.
