S. Vaičiulionis organised the early music vocal ensemble "Polifonija" in Šiauliai in 1974. Initially, the ensemble was under the auspices of the Pedagogical Institute, and later the Higher School of Music. Within ten years, the ensemble learnt about 200 works by 16th-17th century composers, made recordings for Lithuanian radio and television, and released a long-playing record. In 1986 Polifonija was granted professional status and became the Šiauliai State Chamber Mixed Choir of the Lithuanian State Philharmonic, with S. Vaičiulionis as its artistic director and chief conductor and his wife D. Vaičiulionienė as conductor. The core of the new ensemble consists of former Polifonija choristers with musical backgrounds. Over the past 20 years, Polifonija has learnt more than 500 large-scale cantata-oratorio works by composers from the ancient world, as well as classics from Western Europe and Lithuanian composers, and has given about 2000 concerts. It has visited many Lithuanian cities and towns, sung in Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, Brazil, Argentina and Italy. The choirs of the above-mentioned countries have won prizes and other prizes at festivals and competitions. The choir has performed with symphony and chamber orchestras and soloists, and has made recordings for Lithuanian Radio and Television, as well as for radio and television in Latvia, Italy and Brazil. "Polifonija has recorded three records, released a CD in 1995, prepares 4-5 new programmes each year and gives up to 60 concerts. The choir's cyclical concerts have attracted the attention of audiences: "Lithuanian Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries", "Italian Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries", "Religious Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries", "Ancient and Contemporary Music of Lithuania", "Church Music of Lithuania", "Let's Enliven Lithuania", and others. "Polifonija was the first to popularize the masses and hymns of the priest G. Šukias, and to resurrect from oblivion the music of many old Lithuanian composers.
Since 1978, Polifonija started to organize festivals of old music in Šiauliai, which since 1989 have become the international festivals of ecclesiastical music. "The voices of Polifonija were heard at the 1st and 2nd World Lithuanian Song Festivals in Kaunas and Vilnius in 1994, and at the Baltic and Nordic Choir Festival in Riga (Latvia) in 1995.
