Fitzgerald Robert Bernard born in Martinsville, Illinois. He studied trumpet, composition and music pedagogy at the Oberlin Conservatory (until 1932) and at Jordan College (until 1935). As a professor, he taught at Jordan University, Kansas State Teachers College, Hendrix College, the University of Idaho, the University of Texas, the University of Kentucky from 1956 to 1976, and the Jordan Conservatory. Fitzgerald led the Contemporary Music Project from 1963 to 1965, was a member of the editorial board of the Music Educators Journal, and of a number of music education societies.
