Biography
Algimantas Kubiliūnas (b. 1939) is one of the most prolific composers in Kaunas, writing works in various music genres. He has mastered composition techniques and his work is characterized by a sense of form, rich contrasts, lyricism, and dynamic breakthroughs that reveal the romantic nature of the composer, as well as rational creative solutions. Although his music is inseparable from contemporary academic music, it is often called "well-made". In addition to intensive educational work, Kubiliūnas constantly creates and participates in contemporary music festivals.
Algimantas Kubiliūnas studied composition at the J. Tallat-Kelpša Higher Music School in Vilnius from 1956-1961. He studied with Rimvydas Žigaitis and continued his studies in the class of Jurgis Gaižauskas after completing school. He deepened his composition knowledge at the Vilnius State Conservatory (now the Academy of Music and Theater) in the class of Antanas Račiūnas from 1961-1967. From the 1970s onwards, Kubiliūnas taught composition, harmony, and folk music at the J. Gruodis Conservatory in Kaunas, and since 1989 he has been a lecturer at the Kaunas Faculty of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and since 1992 - an associate professor and head of the History and Theory of Music Department. Between 1982 and 1994, Algimantas Kubiliūnas held the position of responsible secretary of the LKSA Kaunas branch. Lithuanian folk music had a major influence on his music. In his chamber compositions, the author uses various contemporary compositional techniques, such as controlled aleatorics, sonorics, free atonality, and dodecaphony. Melodic expression is very important in vocal music.
