Born in a family of poor peasants. Her great-grandfather was a Warsaw nobleman of French origin, who stayed in Švenčionys county during Napoleon's campaign and married a Lithuanian woman.
Graduated from the Tverečius Folk School, and in 1899 from the three-class school in Švenčionys.
Collaborated in the press, wrote scientific papers on social, historical and cultural topics, political articles, translated fiction. Some of his works were controversial and even banned. He was fluent in French, German, English, Russian, Swedish, Italian, Polish, and Old Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and could read other European languages.
