Biography

Benoît Chieux, born in Lille in 1969, is a French animator who works for the Folimage studio, where he has co-directed short and feature-length films1.

Former student of the Emile Cohl school, Tomi Ungerer class (1987-1990).

In an interview with Animation World Network, he explains that Folimage studio films tend to be handmade, sometimes with the help of 2D animation software Toonz, as well as After Effects for compositing, but that purely technological effects tend to age badly1.

His cartoon Tigres à la queue leu leu, based on the eponymous album illustrated by South Korean Kwoon Moon-hee, was nominated for the César for best animated short during the 41st César ceremony in 2016.

His third short film as director, Le Jardin de minuit (2017), was also nominated in the category, during the 43rd César ceremony in 2018.

In 2023, he launched his second feature film as director and screenwriter (after 2014's Tante Hilda!), Sirocco et le Royaume des courants d'air, which opened the 2023 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. The feature will be released in cinemas on December 13, 2023.
