DakhaBrakha is a renowned Ukrainian music quartet formed in Kyiv in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Their name means “give/take” in old Ukrainian, reflecting their mission to both preserve and reinvent Ukrainian folk traditions.
The group’s distinctive style, which they call “ethno-chaos,” blends traditional Ukrainian folk music with global influences, using a wide range of instruments from different cultures and powerful, theatrical vocals. Their performances are known for strong visual elements, a legacy of their theatrical roots.
The quartet consists of:
Marko Halanevych (vocals, percussion, accordion, didgeridoo)
Iryna Kovalenko (vocals, percussion, piano, various folk instruments)
Olena Tsybulska (vocals, percussion)
Nina Garenetska (vocals, cello)
DakhaBrakha has earned international acclaim, performing at major festivals worldwide and winning prestigious awards such as the Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award and the Shevchenko National Prize.
