This collective was founded in 2013, but has already become a true ambassador of jazz in Western Lithuania. It has represented the port city at international jazz festivals in Kaliningrad, Odessa, Šiauliai, Tauragė, presented impressive programmes in Klaipėda, performed with well-known American artists Jojo Mayer, Vern Spevak, David Katz, Spanish Francesko Angel Latino, and Ukrainian Anastasia Bukina.
The orchestra brings together the best jazz musicians of the region - professionals and students, current and former Klaipėda residents. They were brought together by saxophonist Kęstutis Sova, a scholarship holder of the City of Klaipėda. Last year, the musician's services to jazz in the city were recognised with the "Jazz Star" award from the Klaipėda Castle Jazz Festival.
Birštonas Dmitrijus Levencovas, Valdas Surdokas, Domas Grumbinas, Mindaugas Vadoklis, Vytautas Bložė, Jonas Katauskas, Sigitas Saukalas, Donatas Bukauskas, Mindaugas Apulskis will be representing the orchestra in Birtšburg, Dovydas Stalmokas, Noias Jurkus, Danielius Pancerovas, Adam Bitinas, Viacheslav Krasnopiorov, Alexey Morozov, Karolis Zhioltikovas, Arnoldas Jankūnas and Dario Zema (Italy).
Specially for the Birštonas Festival the ensemble has prepared a programme of music by the legendary American jazz pianist, composer and jazz orchestra leader Stanley Kenton (1911-1979). According to K.Sova, it reflects the spirit of jazz in Klaipėda and the spirit of the orchestra he led.
Mat Kenton expanded the concept of this genre, enriched the big band's sound with new colours and stylistic nuances.
"We have already tried the traditional big band way - now we choose music that is interesting to us and reflects the ambitions of Klaipėda jazz. After all, the first famous big band was founded here in the 1980s. Its inspiration, Professor Pranciškis Narusis, also liked Stan Kenton," said the leader of the Klaipėda Jazz Orchestra.
