The Offspring were formed in 1984 in Garden Grove, California, and have released ten studio albums over their long career. The band's success began with the release of the popular album Smash, which was a huge success: when it saw the light of day in 1994, it became the biggest independently released album in music history. It sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, which at the time was an extraordinary success for a band operating outside the major labels.
The success of Smash brought the album to the attention of major labels, including Columbia Records, which signed The Offspring in 1996.The Offshores' first album for the label, 1997's Ixnay on the Hombre, was not as successful as its predecessor, but received favourable reviews and was awarded RIAA gold and platinum certifications. The band's biggest success came with their fifth album, Americana (1998), with three singles - "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)", "Why Don't You Get a Job?" and "The Kids Aren't Alright" - became major hits on radio and MTV, and the album itself sold more than five million copies in the US. They have sold more than 40 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history.
