The ensemble started professional artistic activity in 1953 under the direction of Zbigniew Soi. Other heads were: Roman Kuklewicz (1955o-71), Józef Bok (1971-74), Antoni Szaliński (1974-78), Henryk Wojnarowski (1978-2016). In January 2017, Bartosz Michałowski took over the management.
The main artistic activity of the National Philharmonic Choir is participation in symphonic and oratorical concerts with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and a cappella on the home stage. The chin is present here many times in every season, regularly takes part in the International Festival of Contemporary Music “Warsaw Autumn” and in the International Festival “Wratislavia Cantans”.
The ensemble conducts intensive artistic activities on the international arena. He performed in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia, France and Italy, and in May 2015 together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra he took part in a concert tour of the United Kingdom. It is also invited to concerts by such orchestras as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Munich Philharmoniker, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Bamberger Symphoniker, the Symphony Orchestras in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Orchestrall’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra of the Paris Orchestraalla Scala in Milan.
The first performance of the Choir on the opera stage resulted in further invitations: to Milan – La Scala (1989 – Oberon Weber, 1990 – Fidelio Beethoven), Venice – La Fenice (1986 – Life of the Stravinsky fornicator, 1987 – The Magic Flute of Mozart), Paris (1989 – Fidelio Beethoven), Palermo (1992 – King of Roger Szymanowski, 1993 – King of the StravinskyAntygona Włoszka w Algierze Rossini). In 1988, 1990 and 2001, the Choir took part in ceremonial concerts organized for John Paul II in the Vatican.
The ensemble was conducted by outstanding Polish and foreign masters of the whip and composers – Moshe Atzmon, Gary Bertini, Andrzej Boreyko, Sergiu Comissiona, Henryk Czyż, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Fedoseyev, sir Charles Groves, Jacek Kaspszyk, Kazimierz Kord, Jan Krenz, Helmut Koch, Witold Lutosławski, Lorin Maazel,, Grzegorz Nowak, Seiji Ozawa, Krzysztof Penderecki, Zolt?n Peskó, Sir Simon Rattle, Helmuth Rilling, Wolfgang Rennert, Ljubomir Romansky, Witold Rowicki, Hanns-Martin Schneidt, Jerzy Semkow, David Shallon, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Stanisław Skrowaczewski, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Strav.
The great repertoire of the National Philharmonic Choir includes more than 400 oratorical works and a cappella works of various epochs – from the Middle Ages to the present. A special place is occupied by Polish music, and especially by Krzysztof Penderecki’s work. The band performs and records all of his oratorical and a cappella works. In February 2017, the first album from the Penderecki conducts series Penderecki (Dies illa, Psalms of David and Hymna to St. Peter. Daniiła and Wojciecha) received the prestigious Grammy Award in the Best Choral Performance category. Five previous recordings were nominated for this award: Passion according to St. Peter. Lukasz (twice, 1991 – under the direction of the composer, 2004 – under the direction of Antoni Wit), Polskie Requiem (2005), 7th Symphony “Seven Gates of Jerusalem” (2007), Jutrznia (2009). The album was also nominated with works by Karol Szymanowski Stabat Mater, Demeter and Veni Creator (2008). The recording of the Polish Requiem was also awarded the Record Academy Award 2005 (awarded by the Japanese magazine “Record Geijutsu”). In April 2009, the first album with the masses of Stanisław Moniuszko (DUX) was awarded to Fryderyk in the category Album of the Year – Choral and Oratory Music.
In May 2010, the second album was awarded by the French Academie du Disque Lyrique by the Golden Orpheus – Arturo Toscanini in the category of Best phonographic initiative, which was considered to be the promotion of Stanisław Moniuszko’s work. Both albums are the only recording of all the masses of the Composer on the world market. In March 2011, the Choir received the Fryderyk statuette for his 1989 recording of Requiem. Missa pro defunctis Roman Maciejewski, re-published in a new graphic design in 2010 on the occasion of the composer’s 100th anniversary. Two more Fryderyki received the band for recording the works of Karol Szymanowski: in 2018 – for the album with Litonia to the Virgin Mary, Stabat Mater and the 3rd Symphony “Song of the Night” (together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Jacek Kaspszyk), and in 2020 – for the recording of the Hagith opera (together with the Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Michał). In 2018, he took part in the recording of a monumental collection of 100 out of 100. Musical decades of freedom, published by the Polish Music Publishing House, presenting 100 works by Polish composers from 1918-2019. The band recorded the works of Roman Padlewski, Juliusz Lucuk and Twardowski’s Romuald, and the collection was accompanied by earlier recordings of Szymanowski’s works (the whole collection was also honored with Fryderyk in 2020).
The disciple of the Choir also includes carols (DVD and CD recording) and, among others.
