He was the artistic director and chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra (1992–2009). From 1956 to 1967 he studied cello at the Em. Dārziņš Special Music Secondary School. In 1972 he graduated from the J. Vītols Latvian State Conservatory as a cellist, and in 1982 as a conductor of a symphony orchestra. Since 1967 his artistic activity has been associated with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, initially working there as a cellist, and since 1987 - as a conductor. Imants Resnis has improved his conducting skills at the P. Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory with the legendary Gennady Rozhdestvensky. He received his first international recognition as a conductor in 1988 together with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, participating in the "Prague Spring" festival. In 1992, Imants Resnis became the artistic director and chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra. In 1993, he founded the International Pianist Stars Festival, which took place every year in the second week of March in Liepāja, with the participation of pianists from different countries of the world. He has conducted concerts of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra in Spain, Sweden, Germany, and Malaysia. As a guest conductor, he has visited Turkey, Mexico, Colombia, and Portugal, but in 2000 he performed in Egypt with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Imants Resnis conducted the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra until 2009.
