In 1977 she graduated from the Klaipėda State Conservatoire with a degree in Lithuanian philology and directing. In 1992, she and her colleagues founded the puppet theatre "KU-KŪ", which was later renamed Klaipėda Puppet Theatre. Most of the KU-KŪ theatre's productions consisted of original plays by Jūratė Januškevičiūtė and fairy tales interpreted by the director in her own way.
Jūratė Januškevičiūtė prepared and supervised puppet theatre directing studies at Klaipėda University. In 1993 she was awarded the Boris Dauguvietis Prize, and in 2000 she was awarded the Christopher Award (now the Golden Stage Cross) and the Fortuna Prize.
In 2008, her plays were published in a separate book "The Clown's Shoes" (published by the Lithuanian Folk Culture Centre).
