Krystian Lupa - Polish theater director, scenographer, teacher - was born in 1943 in Poland. In 1969 he graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts (graphics), in 1977 from the Kraków Higher Theater School (directing), since 1983 he has been teaching there; professor (1994). From 1978 to 1986, he directed at C. K. Norwid's Theater in Jelena Góra, from 1978 to 1998, and from 2000 - at H. Modrzejewska's Old Theater in Krakow, Wrocław and Warsaw. He created plays based on works by T. Bernhard ("Kalkverkas" 1992, "Artimieji. Ritter", "Dene, Voss" 1996, Immanuelis Kantas 1996, "Auslöschung / Destruction" 2001) and other Austrian writers ("City of Sleep" 1985, based on A. Kubinas , R. Musili's "Dreamers" 1988, "Maltė" 1991, based on the works of R. M. Rilke, H. Broch's "Lunatikai" part 1 1995, part 2 1998), they raised questions of spiritual crisis, existential fear, faith. Other more important performances: S.I. Witkiewicz's "Pragmatics" (1981) and "Motiej Korbova and Bellatrix" (1986), "The Brothers Karamazov" (1990, 1999, based on F. Dostoyevsky), Y. Reza's "Art" (1997), "The Master and Margarita" (2002 , based on M. Bulgakov), D. Loher's "Klara's relations" (2003), "Zarathustra" (2004, based on F. Nietzsche). K. Lupa usually translates and adapts the texts for the performances himself, creates scenography for them. The performances examine philosophical, social and ethical problems, issues of human existence, characterized by universal stage images, are given a lot of importance for acting. Wrote books ("Utopia and its inhabitants" / Utopia i jej szbojnancy 1994, "Labyrinth" 2001). A documentary film "The Triangle Rises: Krystianas Lupa Creates "Heroes' Square"" (2015, director Mikas Žukauskas) was made about the performance staged in Lithuania. Students: G. Jarzyna, K. Warlikowskis. in 2009 awarded the European Theater Prize. in 2015 At the Lithuanian National Drama Theater, he staged the play "Heroes' Square" based on the play by Thomas Bernhard. In 2016, the director was awarded the Golden Stage Cross for this performance. In 2020, the director returns to Lithuania to stage the play "Austerlics" based on W. G. Sebald's novel at the State Youth Theater.
