Composer, music theoretician, pianist; born January 16, 1980, Bydgoszcz. He is a graduate of the VIII High School in Bydgoszcz (1999) and the Artur Rubinstein State Secondary Music School in Rafał Krokowski's piano class (2003). From 2003 to 2008, he studied under Professor Marek Jasinski at the Department of Composition, Music Theory and Sound Direction at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music, where he earned diplomas with distinction in the specialties of composition and music theory. He is also a graduate of the Faculty of Law and Administration (major: law) at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (2004). In May 2013 he opened a doctoral thesis at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (supervisor: Paweł Łukaszewski, Ph.D.).
In 2008-2011 he worked at the Karol Szymanowski Music School Complex in Toruń as a teacher of general music subjects (ear training, musical forms) and piano improvisation. In 2011 he founded the Studio of Musical Creativity in Bydgoszcz, where he is a manager and pedagogue (he teaches courses: improvisation, composition and piano classes). Since 2011, he has been a tutor of the Ensemble and Ballet Studio operating in Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz.
His oeuvre includes solo, chamber and symphonic works for various performance ensembles. In addition, he is the author of compositions of a didactic nature and music for plays and theatrical productions (including Treasure, Bydgoszcz Monuments). His works have been performed in Denmark, Germany, Great Britain (London Festival of Contemporary Church Music - 2011, 2013), Spain (4th Santander International Organ Festival - 2009; International Choral Festival "Serrania de Cuenca" - 2010), in Italy (International Festival "Sacra a Roma" - 2011), in Lithuania (Christopher Summer Music Festival - 2011), in the USA and in Poland (VIII International Festival of Sacred Song "Łapskie Te Deum" - 2005; Festival "Rybnicka Jesień Chóralna" under the patronage of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki - 2005; Choral Festival "Cantate Domino" in Cracow - 2006, 2007, 2010; All-Poland Passion Song Festival in Bydgoszcz - 2007; XVII Adam Didur Festival in Sanoka - 2007. Adam Didur in Sanok - 2007; International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Czestochowa - 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013; "Legnica Cantat" - 2009). Several compositions have been recorded on CDs and DVDs. The album Prayer, containing his composition Agnus Dei, was nominated for the Fryderyk Phonographic Academy Award in 2013.
For his work as a composer, he received many awards and honors, including.: 1st prize in the 1st National Composition Competition for Choral Passion Song (Bydgoszcz, 2004), honorable mention in the 2nd National Composition Competition for Choral Passion Song (Bydgoszcz, 2006), 2nd prize (1st not awarded) in the 15th National Open Composition Competition named after Adam Didur (Sanok, Poland). Adam Didur (Sanok, 2007), 2nd prize in the 3rd National Composition Competition for Choral Passion Song (Bydgoszcz, 2008), 1st prize in the National Composition Competition for Choral Song a cappella in the category of mixed choirs (Legnica, 2008), First prize in the National Composition Competition for Choral Song a cappella in the category of homogeneous choirs (Legnica, 2008), Second prize in the National Composition Competition "Fides et Ratio" (Torun, 2009), Second prize in the International Composition Competition "Musica Sacra" (Czestochowa, 2009 and 2011), 1st prize and honorable mention in the 2nd National Composition Competition for Choral Liturgical Piece (Bydgoszcz, 2011), as well as 1st prize, the Award of the President of the City of Poznań and the "Composer-in-Residence of Poznań Chamber Choir" Award during the National Composition Competition "Opus 966" for the composition A Patre Unigenite (2013), First Prize in the VI National Composition Competition for Choral Passion Song (Bydgoszcz, 2014), as well as honorable mentions in the international composition competitions "Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award" (Switzerland, 2013) and "Fide et Amore" (Zory, 2014). In addition, his compositions Exaltabo te Domine, In te Domine speravi, Beatus vir were selected through competition for presentation at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music (2011, 2013, 2016). Two of Urbaniak's works were created as part of the "Collections" - Priority Composer Orders program, implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance: Missa in memoriam Beati Georgii Popieluszko (2013) and Missa in honorem Sancti Adalberti (2016). Commissioned by the Center for Promotion of Culture "Gaude Mater" in Częstochowa, Missa in memoriam Beati Georgii Popieluszko was performed during the Liturgical Inauguration of the International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Częstochowa (2013), while in 2015 it was released by the DUX recording company.
Urbaniak's works are in the repertoire of such ensembles as the Polish Chamber Choir "Schola Cantorum Gedanensis" (Gdańsk), Jauna Muzika Vilnius Municipal Choir (Vilnius), Astrolabium (Toruń), Musica Viva (Poznań), Octava Ensemble (Kraków), the Ensemble of Singers of the City of Katowice "Camerata Silesia" (Katowice), the Choir of the University of the Holy Cross. Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski (Warsaw), Akolada (Bydgoszcz), Canto (Wloclawek), Vocal Ensemble of the Academy of Music "Senza rigore" (Wroclaw), Poznan Chamber Choir conducted by Bartosz Michalowski. Compositions have been conducted by Jan Łukaszewski, Vaclovas Augustinas, Maja Metelska, Michał Slawecki, Kinga Litowska, Anna Szostak, Marek Gandecki, Renata Szerafin-Wójtowicz, Zygmunt Magiera, Paweł Łukaszewski, Małgorzata Podzielny, Agnieszka Franków-Zelazny, Mariusz Kończal, Barbara Halec, Anna Grabowska-Borys, Aleksandra Janus, Małgorzata Langer-Król, among others.
Lukasz Urbaniak has been active as an organizer. He was the originator and founder of the Artistic and Scientific Circle at the Department of Composition, Music Theory and Sound Direction at the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz; initiator, co-organizer and juror of the Composition Competition for Secondary Music School Students in memory of Marian Gordiejuk (2007, 2008); Co-organizer and active participant in several interdisciplinary scientific sessions (Postmodernism in Music and Visual Arts - 2006, Sounding Images, or a Meeting with Musical Graphics - 2007, Sources of Inspiration - 2008), numerous composer concerts in the series "Con-front musical reactions", "Counterpoints - laboratory of the young", "School Score". He also conducted workshops "Write music - it's easy", designed for young composition students (Poznań, 2014). Since June 2012, he has been a member of the Artistic and Programming Council of the International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Czestochowa.
For his artistic and organizational activities, the composer was awarded the scholarship of the President of the City of Bydgoszcz (2008) and the bronze medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis (2015).
