The Primal Shelter is the Site for Primal Fears is a project developed and curated by Maija Rudovska (LV) and Patrik Aarnivaara (SE). The project started with an interest in the horror film genre, where a certain aesthetic and fear is often shaped by architectural means. The research was initiated a few years ago, during a collaborative residency at HIAP in Helsinki, under the title Scenography of Horror, and was later developed separately by Maija during a Rupert residency in December 2014. The project was recently presented as a group exhibition at The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik (2016). This project looks at the subject of fear and horror through space and architecture. The house in particular and architecture in general as a possible stage for horror, a place for imagination and action, a reason for psychological stimuli, an initial shelter for future ruins, a safe and yet precarious place that can become a cage, a prison, and a trap.
