Young generation multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser. Matas started his musical career as a saxophonist at Kaunas I Music School. He became particularly interested in harmonic constructions and the possibilities of improvisation within their framework. This eventually led him to the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he studied bachelor's degree in jazz, and later master's degree in contemporary music performance. During his studies, he participated in numerous workshops and masterclasses, and was an active performer at the Academy and abroad. His studies led to a deeper interest in the nature of sound, timbre construction and wave physics, which developed into a passion for modular analogue synthesizers. Over time, the worlds of acoustic and electronic instruments seemed to merge into a common musical language. One of the first electroacoustic projects was the modern ballet Newborn, for which Matas composed and performed the music together with the wolf of the electronic music world Andrius Laucevic (pseudonym Phun Thomas). This project was one of the sparks for the emergence of the electronic music duo Artfcl, and some of the ballet's tracks made it onto the band's debut album. The one and a half year old group has already released six digital recordings, a vinyl record, two digital albums, several singles and remixes. Finally, Matas joined FSS Recordings, a conceptual electronic music label founded by Andrius. This year, Matas also enrolled in a PhD programme at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he will research the principles of encoding and decoding contemporary improvisational music.
