I was born on April 19, 1940, in Vilnius, in a family of teachers. In 1946, I began attending Vilnius 3rd secondary school and finished it in 1956. In 1954, I entered Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Music School and graduated with honors in 1958. That same year, I entered the Lithuanian State Conservatory, where I studied in the class of professor Antanas Račiūnas. There, I created several works, including two string quartets, the symphonic poem "Gilšė," and harmonized Lithuanian folk songs. In 1959, I wrote my first popular songs, "Write Me a Simple Letter" and "You may Never Come." Starting my creative career in the field of "serious" opuses, I found that my songs were more popular with performers and audiences. My life led me to teaching theoretical disciplines at Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Music Technical School as a conservatory student. In 1982, I became the director of Vilnius cultural school, and three years later, I became the director of Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Higher Music School, which I held until 1988. In those years, Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Higher Music School merged with Vilnius cultural school and established Vilnius Conservatory, where I was the director until 1998.
