1969-1971 studied architecture at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. 1970-1977 studied sculpture and architecture at the Lithuanian Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts). Since 1977 he also taught sculpture there. He has been participating in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad since 1977. in 1999 M. Navakas' work "Untitled" was shown in the first Lithuanian exhibition at the 48th Venice Biennale.
