Ornette Coleman was an American jazz saxophonist, violinist, trumpeter, and composer. He was one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960s. Coleman's timbre was easily recognizable: his keening, crying sound drew heavily on blues music. His album 'Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation' was released in 1961 and is considered a landmark in the free jazz movement.
