After graduating from the National Contemporary Dance Centre in Angers in 1992, Rachid Ouramdane immediately embarked on a career as a choreographer and performer, leading to work in France and abroad with the likes of Meg Stuart, Emmanuelle Huynh, Odile Duboc, Christian Rizzo, Hervé Robbe, Alain Buffard and Julie Nioche.
Rachid Ouramdane has presented complex pieces on the international scene posing the question of representation. He has long given pride of place to the danced portrait and also cultivates an art of encounter, involving an experience of all the senses that requires our prejudices to be challenged. For some time now his work has been based on meticulously gathering testimonies, in collaboration with documentary makers and writers, involving video to explore the sphere of the intimate. Through the art form of dance he attempts to contribute to debates in society through choreographic pieces that develop a poetics of testimony.
Today, he is focusing his research on a choreographic writing based on principles of accumulation for large ensembles, such as Toutautour for the 24 dancers of the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon and the piece Tenir le temps for 16 dancers, which premiered at the Festival Montpellier Danse in July 2015. He regularly receives invitations from companies in France and abroad: Superstars (2006) and Tout autour (2014) for the ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, Borscheviks… Une histoire vraie… (2010) for the dancers of the Russian company Migrazia (Russia), Looking back (2011) for the Candoco Dance Company (United Kingdom), and Murmuration (2017) for the Ballet de Lorraine.
Alongside his creative projects, Rachid Ouramdane is working on transmission and exchange in France and abroad. Rachid Ouramdane was associate artist at Bonlieu – Scène Nationale d’Annecy between 2005 and 2015 and at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris from 2010 to 2015.
