Biography
Ramutė Kalnėnaitė (cello) was born on June 8, 1956 in Vilnius. She studied at the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts from 1964 to 1975, where she was in the class of Romanas Armonas. She won her first international and several republican competitions during this time. From 1975 to 1980, she studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where she received qualifications in performance soloist, pedagogue, chamber ensemble performer, and orchestra soloist. At the request of the Lithuanian Republic, she was appointed to work with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, led by Saulius Sondeckis. From 1980 to 1982, she continued her studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory as a soloist assistantship-student. She studied in the class of Professor Stefan Kaljanov for seven years in Moscow. Returning to Lithuania in 1983, she was invited to teach at the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts, where she teaches cello, chamber ensemble and works as an illustrator. In 1984, she won first place in the International Musicians-Performers (prestigious international) competition. Kalnėnaitė performed in the most prestigious halls in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, France, Switzerland, Belarus, Uzbekistan, the United States, and Russia's major cities. She played a solo concert with the Lithuanian National, Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts string and Taschkent Conservatory Chamber Orchestra. She participated in international and republican music festivals in France and Lithuania (Th. Mann, "Alternatyva", "Kristupo Vasaros", "Druskininkų Vasaros with M.K. Čiurlionis" and so on). In 2001, Kalnėnaitė represented Lithuania at the Mstislav Rostropovich International Cello Festival in Riga. In 2004-2005, in the LNOBT American choreographer's performances-concerts "Reflections," she played Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme" for the entire season. She has recorded a lot of music for the LRT funds and has performed chamber music programs with excellent Lithuanian and foreign performers. She was awarded the status of Art Creator in 2005, and has been a member of the Lithuanian Musicians Union since its founding. Since 2006, she has been a member of the "Akademija" quartet. With the quartet, she has performed in Lithuania, and in 2012, recorded a compact disc (W.A. Mozart's and C.M. Weber's quintets with clarinet). Her long-standing friendship with the Lithuanian Writers' Club allows her to participate in events not only in Vilnius but throughout Lithuania. She is actively involved in methodological activities: in 2005, she prepared the program for the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts' string cello section. She organizes international and republican master classes for Lithuanian cello teachers and students and teaches master classes, among which the courses in Prague, Zbraslav, Latvia (Riga), and many Lithuanian cities, Vilnius music schools stand out. Since 2012, Kalnėnaitė has been teaching at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
