Robert De Niro (born August 17, 1943 in Manhattan) is an American actor, director and producer. His first major roles were in the 1973 films Bang the Drum Slowly and Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets. The latter film marked the beginning of a long partnership between De Niro and Scorsese. In 1974, he played the role of the young Vito Corleone, which won him an Oscar, in The Godfather II.
In 1980, he won another Oscar for his leading role in Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull. He was also nominated for Oscars for his roles in Taxi Driver (1976), The Deer Hunter (1978), Awakenings (1990) and Fear's End (1991). In 1990, he was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his role as Jimmy Conway in Scorsese's The Good Guys.
One of the best actors of all time, he has been nominated for six Golden Globe Awards for his roles in New York, New York (1977), Running in the Night (1988), The Disturbed Gangster (1999), and The Last Test of a Groom (2000). De Niro directed 'Bronx Stories' (1993) and 'The Trusted Shepherd' (2006). He has been honored for his contributions to cinema with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award and the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
