R. Hojito began his solo career in 1986 and creates unique music that defies conventional musicological classifications. An important creative impulse in his path was a concert with Otomo Yoshihide in 1990, which helped Hojito to develop a distinctive musical style. The pianist has played with Japanese artists such as the saxophonists Kazutoki Umezu and Junji Hirose, the vocalist Koichi Maikigami, and the world's leading avant-garde musicians such as John Zorn, Tom Cora, John Rose, David Moss, Ned Rothenberg, Joelle Leandre, Nicolas Collins and others. His piano style is characterised by the use of "small instruments" - bells, toys, household utensils - which are used both as stand-alone sound sources and in the piano preparation for unexpected sonoristic effects.
