In 1954 he graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute (student of Antanas Gudaitis and Vytautas Mackevičius), and taught there from 1962-1972. Since 1957 participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad; individual exhibitions in Vilnius (1978), Šiauliai (1979), Moscow (1983). Since 1957 member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union.
He has painted monumental figurative compositions of expressive brushstroke and colour, generalized forms, on themes of work, sport, recreation, history. The cycle of anti-militaristic works ("God of War", "Victim of War", "Prostheses", "Ruined Culture", all 1969) is characterised by allegorical, symbolic and grotesque elements. Emotionally powerful, dramatic paintings on the themes of the Second World War and the post-war years ("Shots from the Forest" - 1972 (LDM), "War Refugees" - 1970 (LDM), "Trampling a Horse" - 1973). The works on the theme of man and nature ("Rest" - 1967 (LDM); "Twilight in the Flowering Garden", "Botanikės" (LDM) - both 1985) are lyrical, free improvisations. He painted landscapes, still lifes, nudes, portraits ("Self-Portrait" - 1974, "Portrait of V. Vinciunas" - 1979). In 1973, he was awarded the LSSR State Prize.
