The whole life and work of sculptor, woodcarver Viliaus Biskias, born in 1954, is connected with Šiauliai. He was born here and has never left this city. Vilius has been creating art since he was young. His early work is solid, strongly wrought, sculptural, striking in the art of treating figures, where each piece conveys a fundamental idea in coded meanings and is distinguished by its ability to compose monumental forms. You can see that the artist does not rely on spontaneous inspiration, but studies each detail at length. In his works, the sculptor analyses the meaning of historical and current time, boldly integrating a variety of materials, often unexpected ones, alongside wood, stone, bronze and brass. The works refer to key historical events - symbols and the development of Christianity (angels, crucifixes, pietas), deportations, and contemporary identity. What the theme of religion means to the sculptor should be discussed separately. Believing in God is not simple and easy, and it is even harder to represent it or to carve it in stone or wood. The paths of Vilius Bisek's sculptures of the Passion of Christ are rooted in Lithuanian religion and mythology. We can find sculptures by Vilius Bisek from our own Hill of Crosses to the United States. Many of his works have travelled to neighbouring Latvia, Hungary, Germany, Italy... Every year the sculptor participates in various exhibitions and creative camps in Lithuania and abroad. He is a member of the Lithuanian Folk Artists' and Samogitian Artists' Unions.
