Vladas Jakubeñas [1904-05-15 Biržai – 1976-12-13 Chicago (USA)], was a Lithuanian composer, pianist, and musicologist. He lived in Kaunas from 1920 to 1924 and again from 1932 to 1944. He arrived in Kaunas in 1920 and attended the sixth and seventh grades at "Aušra" gymnasium. During that time, he also studied at J. Naujalis Music School in piano classes taught by E. Bilminiūtė-Ciurlienė and harmony classes taught by J. Tallat-Kelpša. In 1924, he wrote his first song "Gėlės iš šieno" (lyrics by K. Binkis). He continued his studies in Riga and Berlin. In 1928, he gave his first concert in Kaunas featuring his own compositions. From 1932 to 1943, he taught at Kaunas Conservatory. As a pianist, he performed in Lithuania and abroad. In 1937, he, along with composers V. Bacevičius and J. Kačinskas, founded a progressive musicians' society that joined the International Society for Contemporary Music. Vladas Jakubeñas participated in international music festivals in Paris (1937), London (1938), and Warsaw (1939). From 1940 to 1941, he worked as the responsible secretary of the Organizational Committee of the Composers' Union. He created the ballet "Vaivos juosta" (1944, piano version), three symphonies (1932, 1939, 1942), a symphonic orchestra rhapsody (1937), a prelude and fugue (1929), a string quartet (1930), a sonata, two piano rhapsodies, a serenade for cello and piano (1936), and a poem for soloists, mixed choir, and symphonic orchestra "My World" (lyrics by V. Mykolaitis-Putinas).
