Bertold Brecht (1898-1956) - German writer, theater critic, director. The author started writing the play "Motuše Kuraž and her children" in 1938, when fascist Germany was already openly preparing for war. The action takes place in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years' War. The main character, Ana Firling, called motuše Kuraž (French for "courage"), is a markitan, i.e. i.e. food and beverage vendor. War is her main source of income. Aunt Kuraž is also a mother who does not want her children to die in the fire of war. However, motherhood and war are incompatible. Mother Kuraž loses her children...
Director Elmārs Seņkovs (Latvia) uses B. Brecht's plot, giving the performance a documentary tone and bringing it closer to today's situation - while preserving the Brechtian spirit and principles of his work.
