Event description
The exhibition introduces Kaunas audiences to the exceptional artists Ingryda Suokaite and Rolandas Helmeris, well-known in Germany and worldwide. It features more than 40 paintings and graphic works by Ingrid Suokaitė. Helmer's collection (about 50 pieces) is complemented by paintings, prints and objects of impressive size in the expressionist action painting movement, reflecting both his individual style and the principles of contemporary German Constructivist art. The exhibition is complemented by documentary videos featuring episodes of the artists' work and catalogues. The exhibition at Kaunas Picture Gallery is the artists' ambition to represent their creative ideas in Kaunas with new creative discoveries and gifts for Lithuania. The artists studied together at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and are active members of the art group Gekok and Neue Gruppe (Munich). Their work is based on the transformation of Bauhaus art and abstract - geometric - concrete ideas. Inspired by the thesis of their constructivist teacher Georg Meistermann that "human life is enveloped in colour", both Helmer and Suokaite remain active proponents of these ideas. Helmer is a well-known art educator, former professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, recipient of the German Sudeten Culture Prize, and creates abstract aestheticized compositions based on the principles of optical art. Suokaitė's paintings are expressive, contrasting colours, constructivist concrete, inspired by the rope techniques of Arte Povera. The exhibition will be open at Kaunas Picture Gallery (K. Donelaičio g. 16, Kaunas) until 30 June.
