Divided into thematic chapters "Explosion", "Modernization Projects", "Crisis and Revolt", "Surface" and "Modernity: critique and imagination", the narrative presents modern and contemporary Lithuanian art in the context of the political, social and cultural events of the country and the world in the second half of the 20th and the 21st century. The focus is on the worldview of modernity, its reflection in the contradictory Lithuanian artistic life and artworks of the Soviet era, and its transformation in the contemporary art that has been widely disseminated since independence. A multifaceted narrative is created, combining various small stories, and the contemporary approach is underlined by the interventions of contemporary artists in the exposition. Over 150 works by Lithuanian and expatriate artists of different generations are on display, including paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, textiles, objects, installations, video art, films, etc., including little-known, rarely seen exhibits. The exhibition, which is based on the art collection of the Lithuanian Art Museum, is significantly complemented by works from the State Jewish Museum of Vilnius Gaon, the National Museum of Lithuania, the Museum of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Vilnius University Library, the Jonas Mekas Centre for Visual Arts, the private collections of the Lewben Art Foundation, BTA Art, the collection of Audronė and Marius Vaupšiai, the collection of Andrius Jankauskas, and the artists' own studios.
