The Kaunas music ensemble "Ainiai" was founded in 1991 on the initiative of Jonas Urbonas and Kaunas Drama Theatre actor Petras Venclova. For about a year the ensemble was operating without legal status, as a collective of amateur musicians, and in 1992 it became a legal entity. "Ainiai was the first professional ensemble in Lithuania to be legalised as a budgetary institution. Its composition has changed several times, but the ensemble has always included only professional musicians and soloists with higher musical education. All the performers of the ensemble are multi-instrumentalists.
The music ensemble Ainiai has toured in Russia, Ukraine, Germany, England, Poland, France, Norway, the USA, Canada, Sweden, Belgium, South Korea, etc.
One of the most memorable concerts of the ensemble "Ainiai" took place in the Town Hall of Oslo (Norway), after which the representatives of the city expressed their regret that "even for 50 years this kind of music has been under the Iron Curtain", and a heartfelt thank you was sent from the staff of the Embassy of Lithuania.
After the concerts in England, the concerts were a great success, not only in the homes of the Lithuanian community in England, but also earned an exclusive permission to play in Covent Garden, where many of the now renowned musicians-artists started their musical careers.
At the Beverley Festival (UK), Ainiai surprised both the participants and the audience by showing that church-style music can be performed in a different way, thus earning the audience's affection. After the concert in Detmold, the ensemble was invited to play at the Hamburg Fair.
The tour in America was also memorable for its acquaintance with the President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, who, speaking about the ensemble, said: "when talking about Lithuanian music, the ensemble Ainiai should be mentioned separately". During the tour, the ensemble played at various festivals, churches, fairs and for Lithuanian communities abroad.
The ensemble is a regular participant of Kaunas City Days and other Kaunas festivals. In addition to concerts for adults, the ensemble has been engaged in educational activities since the very beginning of its activity. The ensemble plays in schools and kindergartens in the country. Currently, one of the ensemble's main priorities is educational activities. The ensemble continues its cooperation with Lithuanian schools and kindergartens, and offers only professional concert programmes for children that meet the recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania.
"Ainių" concerts feature more than 20 different Lithuanian instruments: birbynes, kanklės, horns, kozragiai, ožragi, skudučiai, daudytės, tabalai, scrabalai, lumzdeliai, luminukai, jingulis, pliauška, and others. These instruments are used not only to perform Lithuanian folk songs and dances, but also original compositions by various composers.
