The only festival in the Baltic States, which every year presents its listeners with works in the style of World Music, presents another premiere this year - World music work by Lithuanian composer Mindaugas Stumbro based on Ukrainian traditional music "SPELL".
"The work is very versatile, colorful, covering a wide range of musical genres and inspired by world intonations. String quartet, guitar, double bass, piano, trumpet, percussionists and vocal ensemble are used. Percussion became one of the most significant parts of this work. The wide instrumentation of percussion instruments allowed the rhythmic diversity of world music to unfold perfectly. Ukrainian folk songs, performed by the folklore ensemble SVIATO, are undoubtedly the axis of this piece, which is also surrounded by motifs of Lithuanian folk songs, rhythm and harmony of southern countries, and intonations of the Middle East. The string quartet became a kind of connecting part that united all the musical themes into a single and coherent piece of large musical form. It does not lack episodic improvisational elements, trumpet, piano and guitar solo interludes. All this, in my opinion, creates an extremely colorful opus, which involves the listener and does not let go until the last chord" (M. Stumbras).
Nurturing the traditional music of various nations, the "Pokrovo Varpai" festival has been held since 2006. The Lithuanian audience presented folklore ensembles from Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Mexico, Norway, Holland, Sakartvel, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, etc.
Colorful festival programs combine performances of the best ensembles, educational and scientific events. Well, during the opening of the premiere of World music works, "Pokrovo varpai" has already become the calling card of this festival. The main goal of this initiative, which has been running since 2009 and attracts professional music and authentic folklore performers, is to perpetuate the brightest examples of musical folklore, to interest both exclusively folk art lovers and professional art lovers, to educate children and youth in culture, and to arouse the need to be interested in the history of their country. and musical heritage. The most famous Lithuanian and foreign ensembles and famous conductors have become permanent partners and performers.
