In a small impoverished provincial town, where factories have long ceased to operate, trains carrying important passengers do not stop, the fabulously rich Mrs. Claire arrives. She once grew up in that town, but she hasn't left in more than four decades. Multi-billionaire Claire, who can financially support the town community, is the residents' last hope to restore the town's prosperity. The old lady agrees to donate a billion to the town on one condition - that justice be restored to the town. The director of the play, Aidas Giniotis, is looking for an answer to the most important questions raised by the playwright - can money buy justice, freedom, and happiness? Or is justice just a mask we use to cover our greed and other weaknesses? What is the cost of youthful mistakes and betrayal, what is the cost of one human life, what is the cost of our humanistic ideals and principles? According to the director, there are three main characters in this play - the old lady Claire Cachanasian, her childhood friend Ilis and the town community. All the intrigues of the play are woven in this triangle. Those intrigues have not lost their relevance since the creation of the play, because we still live in a world that cares too much about material values.
"The Visit of the Old Lady" is the play that brought Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) worldwide fame. The writer believed that the days of tragedies have passed, and only comedy can reveal the tragedy of today's life. Dürrenmatt makes you laugh and feel sad, cringe and cringe, like a clown performing charming tricks on the edge of an abyss.
