The popular American musical "My Fair Lady" has returned to the stage of Kaunas State Musical Theatre. This world-famous play was staged in New York in 1956 and was the only and unique success of composer F. Loewe and libretto author A. J. Lerner. The performance premiered at the prestigious Broadway Theatre, starring prominent artists Julia Andrews and Richard Burton. The libretto of the musical is based on the play "Pigmalion" (1912) by the Irish playwright G. B. Shaw. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phonetician, so that she may pass as a lady. Despite his cynical nature, Higgins falls in love with her. The play's widest audiences know it as the inspiration for the highly romanticized 1956 musical and 1964 film My Fair Lady.
The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a notable critical and popular success, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It set a record for the longest run of any musical on Broadway up to that time – closed on September 29, 1962, after 2,717 performances.
