We can distinguish two strands of creative practice. These are the systematic visualisation of a specific idea or a thoughtful context in a work of art, or the spontaneous, intuitive expression of an inner impulse that is disconnected from rational decision. A drawing can represent both directions - it can become a sketch for a future project that spreads to other media, or it can remain within the framework of an independent and unrestricted genre.
"Grifados" is not an exhibition of academic drawing. The idea is to reflect and actualise what remains beyond the image. When an image is graphically created on the surface, but its origins lie somewhere deep, on an irrational plane. When the image in the work imitates not reality but imagination. This is an exhibition about experimentation, the process of drawing, its fluidity, its subconscious activity, the necessity of the image to slip into reality in different forms, despite their referentiality. It is an exhibition about error, primordial expression, naivety, the seismographic scale of creativity, when the free hand overcomes consciousness, and the thought transferred to the image highlights its universality.
The artists participating in the exhibition from different fields of study emphasise irrational spontaneity, the (in)ability marked by schemes and traces, and the tireless pursuit of novelty in the attempt to grasp onto something changeable and real.
*Grifades are lines carved into the walls of the caves of primitive people, imitating the scratched marks of bears sharpening their claws into tree trunks.
The exhibition is part of the creative programme of the Lithuanian Artists' Union and the Arka Gallery. The strategic activities of the organisation are funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
The exhibition is part of the Vilnius City Municipality's SU-MENĖK initiative.
