"Camino Real" is a play by one of the most famous US playwrights, Tennessee Williams, which is still unheard of in Lithuanian theater. This is an enigmatic work that surpassed the dramaturgical trends of its time. The play was misunderstood and underappreciated by the audience of its contemporaries - precisely because of this early failure in the context of modern drama, it is forgotten and rarely performed on world stages. From today's perspective, it could be argued that this was one of the prophecies of the Theater of the Absurd, written too soon.
In the play, using poetic language, T. Williams talks about oblivion and unnecessaryness, people abandoned by God or who have forgotten him. The work features fictional characters, once famous literary heroes or historical figures, wandering in a place that exists outside of space and time.
Among the many colorful figures, two main plot lines stand out: the love story of the historical lover Jacques Casanova and the courtesan Margarita Gauthier (character of Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Lady with the Camellias"), and the game of the young American Kilroy, a former boxing champion, with fate and his struggle with himself. It is a dream-carnival that invites you to celebrate misfortunes as much as successes.
