Event description

BAMBUKO SUMI-E PAINTING AND JAPANESE CALIGRAPHY

Sumi-e (Japanese: 墨絵 "ink and painting") and Shodō (Japanese: 書道 "writing and the way") are monochrome paintings or close to it, painted on rice paper in soft, diluted water colours. The two-thousand-year-old technique originated in China and later came to Japan. The basic working tools of sumi-e and calligraphy, also known as the "Four Jewels", have remained unchanged until today. These are the brush (Jap. fude), the ink tile (Jap. sumi), the handmade paper (Jap. washi) and the ink blender (Jap. suzuri). The most important characteristic of all of them is their special sensitivity.

During the class you will learn about the calligraphic principles of the traditional Japanese painting techniques of sumi-e and Shodō (Japanese: 書道 "spelling and path"), the special painting tools, and the peculiarities of bamboo painting and the different styles. Bamboo painting emerged as a distinct genre in 8th-9th century China. It is a symbol of good luck, fortitude and inner strength, which expresses a person of honour.

You will also paint 竹 (Japanese (たけ) take - bamboo), 寿 (Japanese kotobuki - greeting, longevity) hieroglyphics according to Japanese calligraphy rules. You will also write your name in the Japanese syllabic writing system katakana.

The class will be led by Marija Šimanskaitė, who has been interested in Oriental culture, Japanese sumi-e painting and calligraphy for many years, and is the founder of the private Japanese Culture House in Vilnius and the caretaker of the Japanese Garden Sei Shin en together with the artist Dalia Dokšaite.
