This exhibition presents the first disciples of Jesus Christ, known as the Apostles (Greek: apostolos - messenger). In the New Testament, we read that Jesus first called the twelve: Peter, James the Elder, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the Younger, Judas Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas Iscariot. But there were more apostles: the apostate Judas was replaced by the elected apostle Matthew, and Paul, a passionate promoter of Christianity, is also called an apostle, even though he did not meet Jesus directly. The tradition of apostolic portrayals has evolved from biblical narratives, apocryphal works and legends. Like many other saints, the lives of the apostles are described in the Golden Legend of James of Voragine, a collection of accounts of the lives of early Christian and medieval saints that had a profound influence on medieval art and literature.
